Frequently Asked Questions
Here we will answer some of your most frequently asked questions. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please feel free to email us with your question.
What do I need to know to start researching my Irish ancestors?
The more you know about your ancestors, the quicker and easier the research should be. However, as a guide, it is important to at least know
the surname and the Parish or townland they came from. If the surname is unusual, it might be possible to trace them without knowing their exact
place of origin in Ireland.
Which Irish Counties does your service cover?
We carry out research for the whole island of Ireland. While many documents are available in central repositories
such as the National Library of Ireland and National Archives, when necessary, we will travel to the relevant locations
to review local sources.
How far back can you trace my family tree?
The average family with Irish roots can trace their ancestors back to the mid-1800s.
Before this, if your ancestors held prestigious roles in society, owned property or featured in the courts system,
they are more likely to appear in earlier records.
What research do you carry out?
The research required varies from case to case. We will evaluate your project and suggest to you the most relevant resources
in which to carry out research. These resources may include Census Returns, Church Records, Civil Registration Records
(Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates), Property Surveys, Wills, Deeds, Genealogical Office Manuscripts (including Grants of Arms),
Military Records, Estate Records, School Registers, Transportation & Convict Records, Newspapers and Trade Directories, to name but a few.
If I want to do the research myself, can you point me in the right direction?
Of course we can. For a fee of €20, we will review your project and provide you with our suggestions for the best research options.
How long does commissioned research take?
It will depend on the extent of the project, but usually you will get results within 10-15 working days of placing your order.
More detailed projects will take longer.
How much does it cost?
Prices begin from €20 to obtain certain documents. The cost of a research project can vary greatly, depending on the extent of the research required.
The average cost of a project is between €80 and €150. However, if you have a budget in mind,
we can discuss research options to fall within these limits.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes. A 50% deposit is required with all orders. The balance is then payable on completion of your research,
at which point you will receive your personalised report.
Can I pay by credit card?
Certainly. We offer a number of payment options include Euro cheque, electronic fund transfer and credit card payments via PayPal.
We will send you full details of all of these payment methods when you are ready to place an order.
If you don't find my ancestor's baptismal record in the Parish records we expected, can I get a refund?
Unfortunately not. We cannot guarantee a positive result. We will discuss our research plans with you before we begin and will carry out our search in the most relevant resources, based on the information
available. In cases where it is quite unlikely to find a match, you will be advised of this before your order is taken.
